Singing and preaching have always been a huge part of my life. I started singing in church when I was so small the congregation couldn’t see me standing at the pulpit. Throughout college, I sang and traveled with a quartet, and those experiences are some of the best memories of that time. I continued to sing at the various churches where Linda and I served. It was called “special music” back in the day.
Well, one year, Linda and I were camping in the San Diego area and decided to stop in to see an old friend. Orval Butcher was a dear family friend, a boyhood friend of Linda’s dad. He, too, was a preacher, but also wrote music, played the piano, and sang.
At the time of our visit, Orval was in his early 90s and had moved into a retirement home. At the end of our visit, I asked Orval if he would sing for us. I will never forget his response. He said, “No, I have lost my song.” His answer made me want to cry. And I have promised myself that I will never lose my song. It may not sound the way it used to, but I’ll be singing until I take my last breath, and then I’ll join the choir in Heaven!
